The tribal economies of the Indian subcontinent, before colonial interventions, were primarily subsistence-based and closely tied to forests, shifting agriculture, and local barter trade systems. These communities maintained a symbiotic relationship with nature and had their own indigenous systems of governance, exchange, and resource management. However, British colonialism disrupted these traditional systems through administrative, economic, and legal interventions. The consequences of these changes were profound and long-lasting, leading to the marginalization, impoverishment, and disintegration of tribal economies. The most significant colonial intervention was the introduction of private property in land and the legal framework of land revenue administration. Traditional tribal communities followed communal landholding patterns, with land viewed as a shared resource. The British introduced concepts of individual ownership and settled revenue systems through legislations like the Permanent Settlement, Ryotwari, and Mahalwari systems. These frameworks failed to recognize tribal rights over land and forests, resulting in large-scale alienation of tribal lands. Land that had been communally cultivated for generations was now surveyed, taxed, and declared state property if not under formal titles. Consequently, tribal communities were dispossessed and often pushed into labor or indebted tenancy under moneylenders and landlords. In addition to land alienation, the colonial state’s forest policies had a devastating effect on tribal economies. The Indian Forest Acts of 1865, 1878, and 1927 categorized forests into Reserved, Protected, and Village forests, placing vast tracts under state control.
