Loans were not merely economic transactions; they were embedded in the social, religious, and political fabric of society. In the agrarian economy of medieval India, especially under the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal rule, loans were often taken by peasants to meet their subsistence needs, pay land revenue, or cover the cost of agricultural inputs. The land revenue system, particularly under the Mughal regime, was quite burdensome. The zamindars (landlords) and state officials demanded high taxes, often irrespective of the actual agricultural output. In this context, loans became a coping mechanism for peasants during years of poor harvest, drought, or famine.
