Urban anthropology is a specialized branch of anthropology that studies the social, cultural, economic, and political dimensions of urban life. Urban life in medieval India was not static but was marked by continuous movement of people, ideas, commodities, and power structures. Cities such as Delhi, Lahore, Multan, Daulatabad, Gulbarga, Bidar, and Ahmadabad became epicenters of administrative control, cultural efflorescence, and economic exchange. These cities were shaped by Islamic architectural principles, market economies, artisanal guilds, and new systems of governance introduced by the Sultans and their successors. The scope of urban anthropology in examining the dynamism of urban life during this period involves several dimensions: 1. Migration and Population Mobility: One of the most defining features of urban growth during 1206–1550 was the large-scale migration of people into cities. These included artisans, scholars, soldiers, administrators, traders, and religious figures from different parts of the Islamic world, including Central Asia, Persia, and Arabia.
