1.a) The distance modulus of a star is-0.1. At what distance is it from the earth?

b) After about 1 billion year, the radius of a star is expected to increase by 100 times its present radius. If its temperature becomes half of what it is today, determine the change in its absolute magnitude.

c) Explain the following terms with the help of a diagram, wherever needed: celestial sphere, zenith, circumpolar stars, diumal circle, resolving power of a telescope.

2.a) A main sequence star has mass 2x1031 kg and radius 3x109 m. Obtain an estimate of the average temperature throughout the star.

b) Explain how sunspots survive for so long even though they are surrounded by hotter matter.

c) The mean distance of Mars from the Earth is 0.5 A.U. and its orbital period is 687 days. Calculate the orbital period of Jupiter given that its mean distance from the Earth is 4 A.U.

d) A star has surface temperature of 25000 K. Which lines would be prominent in its spectrum and why?

e) Derive the expression for the mean temperature in a star:

3. a) Describe the composition of the interstellar medium. Explain how it has been possible to map the HI clouds.

b) Derive an expression for Jeans mass and discuss its significance in the formation of stars.

c) A white dwarf star has a mass of 1030kg. Its luminosity is 1024 Js-1. Calculate how long it can survive with its present luminosity if its internal temperature is 107 K.

d) How long will a 5Mequation, star burn hydrogen as fuel, given that the Sun will do so for about 1010 years?

4.a) Distinguish between elliptical, spiral and lenticular galaxies and give one example of each type of galaxy.

b) What is an active galaxy? What is the source of its activity? Under what conditions does an active galaxy emit synchrotron radiation?

c) What do you understand by cosmic distance ladder? Explain how it is used to estimate distance of stars.

1.क) एक तारे का दूरी मापांक 0.1 है। उसकी पृथ्वी से दूरी क्या है? 

ख) एक अरब वर्ष बाद एक तारे की त्रिज्या बढ़कर अपने वर्तमान मान की 100 गुना हो जाएगी। यदि उस समय इसका तापमान घटकर वर्तमान तापमान का आधा रह जाए तो इसके निरपेक्ष कांतिमान के मान में परिवर्तन निर्धारित करें। 

ग) आवश्यकतानुसार चित्र की सहायता से निम्नलिखित पदों का अर्थ समझाएं :

खगोल, शिरोबिन्दु, सदोदित तारा, दैनिक वृत्त, दूरबीन की विभेदन क्षमता। 

 2. क) एक मुख्य अनुक्रम तारे का द्रव्यमान 2 × 1031 kg तथा उसकी त्रिज्या 3 × 10m है। तारे में औसत तापमान का अनुमानित मान परिकलित करें। 

ख) समझाएं कि तप्त पदार्थ से घिरे होने के बावजूद सूर्य कलंक इतने अधिक समय तक कैसे बने रहते हैं। 

ग) पृथ्वी से मंगल ग्रह की माध्य दूरी 0.5 A.U. है तथा मंगल ग्रह की कक्षीय अवधि 687 दिन है। यदि पृथ्वी से बृहस्पति की माध्य दूरी 4 A.U. है तो बृहस्पति की कक्षीय अवधि परिकलित करें। 

घ) किसी तारे की सतह का तापमान 25000 K है। इस तारे के स्पेक्ट्रम में मुख्यतः कौन-सी रेखाएं परिलक्षित होंगी? अपने उत्तर की व्याख्या करें। 

ड.) किसी तारे के माध्य तापमान के लिए निम्नलिखित व्यंजक व्युत्पन्न करें :

3. क) अंतरातारकीय माध्यम की संरचना बताएं। समझाएं कि HI बादलों का मानचित्रण किस प्रकार संभव हो पाया।

ख) जीन्स द्रव्यमान के लिए व्यंजक व्युत्पन्न करें तथा तारों के निर्माण के संदर्भ में इसके महत्व की चर्चा करें।

ग) किसी श्वेत वामन तारे का द्रव्यमान 1030 kg है। इसकी ज्योति 1024 Js-1 है। यदि तारे का आंतरिक तापमान 107K है तो वह समय परिकलित करें जब तक यह इसी ज्योति के साथ बना रहेगा?

घ) यदि सूर्य हाइड्रोजन को ईंधन के रूप में 1010 वर्षों तक उपयोग करेगा तो 5 Mequation द्रव्यमान वाला तारा कितने समय तक हाइड्रोजन को ईंधन की तरह उपयोग करेगा?

4.क) दीर्घवृत्तीय, सर्पिल और मसूराकार मंदाकिनियों में अन्तर करें। प्रत्येक प्रकार की मंदाकिनी का एक उदाहरण दें।

ख) सक्रिय मंदाकिनी क्या होती है? इसकी सक्रियता का क्या स्रोत है? सक्रिय मंदाकिनियों द्वारा सिन्क्रोटॉन विकिरण उत्सर्जित होने के लिए किन शर्तों का पूरा होना आवश्यक है?

ग) अंतरिक्ष दूरी सोपान से आप क्या समझते हैं? इसकी सहायता से तारों की दूरी का मापन कैसे किया जाता है?
