खंड-क
1. निम्नलिखित गद्यांशों की व्याख्या व्याख्या:
(क) घर आकर मैंने पत्र सीधा बुआ को दे दिया और वह उसको खोलकर तभी पढ़ने में लग गई। खत बड़ा नहीं था। लेकिन कई मिनट तक वह उसे पढ़ती रही। यह भी भूल गई कि प्रमोद भी उनको कोई है और इस वक्त वह पास ही खड़ा है। काफी देर के बाद उन्होंने वहाँ से आँख हटाई, खत को धीमे-धीमे तह किया और मुझको देखा मानो उस वक्त मुझे वह पहचान नहीं रही थीं। मानों सब भूल गई कि कया था, क्या है, क्या होगा। फिर उसी बेबूझ भाव से मुझे देखते रहकर मानो यंत्र की भाँति उस खत को फाड़कर नन्हें-नन्हें टुकड़ों में कर दिया। मानों वह कुछ नहीं कर रहीं, जाने कौन करा रहा है।
(ख) वंशीधर ने अलोपीदीन को आते देखा तो उठ कर सत्कार किया; किंतु स्वाभिमान सहित। समझ गये कि यह महाशय मुझे लज्जित करने और जलाने आये हैं। क्षमा-प्रार्थना की चेष्टा नहीं की। वरन् उन्हें अपने पिता की यह ठकुरसुहाती की बात असहृदय-सी प्रतीत हुई। पर पंडित जी की बातें सुनी तो मन की मैल मिट गयी। पंडित जी की ओर उड़ती हुई दृष्टि से देखा। सद्भाव झलक रहा था। गर्व ने लज्जा के सामने सिर झुका दिया। शर्माते हुए बोले-यह आपकी उदारता है जो ऐसा कहते हैं। मुझसे जो कुछ अविनय हुई है उसे क्षमा कीजिए। मैं धर्म की बेड़ी में जकड़ा हुआ था, नहीं तो वैसे मैं आपका दास हूँ। जो आज्ञा होगी, वह मेरे सिर-माथे पर।

खंड-क
1. निम्नलिखित गद्यांशों की सप्रसंग व्याख्या कीजिए :
(क) पिताजी उनको बड़ा स्नेह करते थे। उनकी सभी इच्छाएँ वह पूरी करते। पिता का यह स्नेह उन्हें बिगाड़ न दे, इस बात का मेरी माता को खासा खयाल रहता था। वह अपने अनुशासन में सावधान थीं। मेरी बुआ को कम प्रेम करती थीं, यह तो किसी हालत में नहीं कहा जा सकता। पर आर्य गृहिणी का जो उनके मन में आदर्श था, मेरी बुआ को वे ठीक उसी के अनुरूप ढालना चाहती थीं।
(ख) नाश्ता कर गजाधर बाबू बैठक में चले गए। घर छोटा था और ऐसी व्यवस्था हो चुकी थी कि उसमें गजाधर बाबू के हरने के लिए कोई स्थान न बचा था। जैसे किसी मेहमान के लिए कुछ अस्थायी प्रबंध कर दिया जाता है, उसी प्रकार बैठक में कुर्सियों को दीवार से सटाकर बीच में गजाधर बाबू के लिए पतली सी चारपाई डाल दी गई थी गजाधर बाबू उस कमरे में पड़े-पड़े, कभी-कभी अनायास ही इस सुस्थायित्व का अनुभव करने लगते। उन्हें याद हो आती उन रेलगाड़ियों की, जो आतीं और थोड़ी देर रुककर किसी और लक्ष्य की ओर चली जातीं।
