Write a note on the evidential problem of evil.

The evidential problem of evil is one of the most significant and enduring challenges to theism, particularly in the philosophy of religion. Unlike the logical problem of evil, which argues that the existence of evil is logically incompatible with the existence of an omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent God, the evidential problem of evil takes a more probabilistic and empirical approach. It does not claim that the existence of God and evil is logically impossible, but rather that the presence, extent, and apparent gratuitousness of evil in the world constitute strong evidence against the existence of such a God.

One of the most influential formulations of the evidential problem of evil comes from the American philosopher William Rowe. Rowe distinguishes between two types of evil: moral evil, which results from human actions (such as murder, theft, and cruelty), and natural evil, which arises from natural processes (such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and diseases). In his argument, Rowe focuses particularly on instances of intense suffering that appear to serve no greater good. He introduces the concept of gratuitous evil—suffering that seems to be unnecessary and not logically connected to any morally sufficient reason.

Rowe’s famous example involves the suffering of __________ _____ ____ ____ ____ ____ _______ ________ ____ ________ _________.
