Peace for society is one of the most fundamental conditions for human survival, social progress, and sustainable development. Throughout history, societies have struggled with the consequences of violence, wars, social divisions, and conflicts of various scales. Yet, every civilization has also aspired to achieve peace, recognizing it as not merely the absence of war but as the presence of justice, harmony, and cooperation among people. In the field of peace and conflict management, peace is viewed as a multidimensional concept that goes beyond silencing weapons to addressing the structural and cultural roots of violence. It is about creating conditions in which individuals and communities can thrive without fear, oppression, or exclusion. The idea of peace in society can be examined from two perspectives: negative peace and positive peace. Negative peace refers to the absence of direct violence such as wars, riots, or physical harm. It is a minimum requirement for societal stability but is not sufficient by itself. Positive peace, on the other hand, is much deeper and refers to the presence of justice, equity, and fairness in social, political, and economic systems. A society with positive peace ensures that people’s basic needs are met, human rights are respected, and mechanisms for resolving disputes exist in non-violent and constructive ways. For example, a society where poverty, discrimination, and inequality are widespread may appear peaceful on the surface if there is no war, but underlying tensions can lead to unrest if these structural issues are not addressed.
