Economic nationalism in the context of the Indian National Movement refers to the idea of building an independent and self-reliant economy, free from colonial exploitation. Indian thinkers during the colonial period highlighted the importance of economic autonomy as an integral part of political independence. Economic nationalism aimed at challenging the British economic policies that drained India’s resources and stifled its growth. It sought to promote domestic industries, protect Indian interests, and use economic policies as a means of fostering national unity and self-determination. 

Economic nationalism can be viewed as a response to the colonial economy that the British had established in India.
