The Balwant Rai Mehta Committee was constituted in 1957 by the Indian government to suggest measures for the decentralization and democratization of the administration in the country. The committee was named after its chairman, Balwant Rai Mehta, a former Member of Parliament and a prominent political leader.

The committee submitted its report in 1958, which came to be known as the Report of the Committee on Panchayati Raj Institutions.
