Working memory

Working memory can be defined as a limited-capacity system that temporarily holds and manipulates information necessary for complex cognitive tasks. It allows individuals to actively maintain information in the mind, update it as needed, and use it to guide behavior and make decisions. According to Baddeley and Hitch's influential model, working memory consists of several components:

1. Central Executive: Acts as the supervisory system that controls attention, coordinates the activities of the subsystems, and allocates resources to different tasks.

2. Phonological Loop: Handles auditory and verbal information, preserving the order of information by using a phonological store (inner ear) and a subvocal rehearsal process (inner voice).

3. Visuospatial Sketchpad: Processes visual and spatial information, enabling mental imagery and spatial reasoning. It consists of a visual cache (storage of visual information) and an inner scribe (processes spatial and movement information).

4. Episodic Buffer: Integrates information across different modalities and maintains a sense of time, binding information from the other subsystems into a coherent episode.
