The Upanishads are ancient philosophical texts that form the concluding part of the Vedic literature. They are often referred to as Vedanta, meaning the “end of the Vedas,” both in a temporal sense, because they are the last portions of the Vedic corpus, and in a philosophical sense, because they represent the culmination of Vedic thought. Its name, which means the “great forest Upanishad,” suggests both its expansive nature and its setting, perhaps in the forest retreats where sages and seekers gathered to engage in dialogue and contemplation.
