 UCIL stands for Union Carbide India Limited, which was a subsidiary of the American multinational company Union Carbide Corporation (UCC). The Bhopal disaster, also known as the Bhopal gas tragedy, occurred at the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, on December 2-3, 1984.

The material that caused the health hazard in the UCIL accident was methyl isocyanate (MIC). MIC is an extremely toxic and reactive chemical used in the production of pesticides, including carbamate pesticides like Sevin.
