Cooperatives have been one of the most significant institutional innovations in the Indian rural landscape, contributing immensely to the process of rural development. Rural India has historically been dependent on agriculture and related activities, which are often marked by small landholdings, lack of capital, exploitation by middlemen, and vulnerability to natural risks. In this context, cooperatives emerged as a mechanism to bring together people with common economic interests, pool resources, and ensure collective welfare. Their contribution to rural development spans across credit, agriculture, marketing, housing, consumer services, and empowerment of marginalized groups. The cooperative movement in India has its roots in the colonial period, with the passage of the Cooperative Societies Act in 1904. The intention was to provide rural credit and free farmers from the clutches of moneylenders. Since then, cooperatives have expanded into almost every sector of rural life. They are based on the principles of mutual help, democratic decision-making, and equitable distribution of benefits. Their contribution to rural development can be examined across multiple dimensions. One of the primary contributions of cooperatives has been in the field of rural credit. For decades, rural households depended heavily on moneylenders who charged exorbitant interest rates, pushing farmers into cycles of debt and poverty.
