Cooperatives have been one of the most significant institutional innovations in the Indian rural landscape, contributing immensely to the process of rural development. Rural India has historically been dependent on agriculture and related activities, which are often marked by small landholdings, lack of capital, exploitation by middlemen, and vulnerability to natural risks. In this context, cooperatives emerged as a mechanism to bring together people with common economic interests, pool resources, and ensure collective welfare. The cooperative movement in India has its roots in the colonial period, with the passage of the Cooperative Societies Act in 1904. The intention was to provide rural credit and free farmers from the clutches of moneylenders. Since then, cooperatives have expanded into almost every sector of rural life. They are based on the principles of mutual help, democratic decision-making, and equitable distribution of benefits.
