What is syadavada? Discuss the moral significance of Syadavada.

Syadavada literally means the ‘method of examining different probabilities’. The two terms are two aspects of the same principle or two sides of the same coin. The basic difference between them is that Anekantavada is the knowledge of all differing but opposite attributes whereas Syadavada is a process of relative description of a particular attribute of an object or an event.

Syadvada is the epistemology of Jaina philosophy. It is the theory of relativity of knowledge. It asserts that all knowledge is relative, conditional and partial. which logically implies that all our judgments(naya) are double-edged. Infinitely complex reality(ananta dharmakam vastu) is real as well unreal.Viewed from the point of view of substance,it is real;Viewed from the point of view of modes, it is unreal. Jain philosophers gives the example of 6 blind men and elephant who touch different parts like ear, leg, trunk, tail etc. and describe elephant as fan, pillar, python, rope etc. So, even though all are correct but their truth is partial truth , half truth. this ideology makes Jainism broad-minded and tolerant. It teaches respect for others point of view. Every view is real from its own substance,space,time and form.
