The arrival and rapid spread of the internet has been one of the most consequential structural shifts for journalism and mass communication in the past three decades. For students of Introduction to Journalism and Mass Communication, understanding how digital connectivity has reshaped production, distribution, economics and audience behavior is essential. At its core, the internet has redistributed gatekeeping power, shortened news cycles, multiplied content formats, and forced legacy print and electronic outlets to reinvent their business and editorial models. One obvious effect is the dramatic change in audience habits. Where newspapers and scheduled television broadcasts once commanded most attention, audiences now expect on-demand access, constant updates, and a plurality of sources. In India this shift coincided with a sharp rise in active internet users and mobile broadband penetration during the COVID-19 period, which accelerated digital adoption as people stayed at home and sought news, entertainment and services online. Industry studies estimate India’s active internet audience rose to roughly 622 million in 2020 and projected further growth to around 900 million by 2025, reflecting a major expansion of the potential digital news audience.
