The ontological  is so called because it attempts to show that the very concept of the idea of God implies his existence in reality. That is to say, if a person is able to clearly conceive the idea of God then he or she ought to be able to understand and accept that God must exist. It was St. Anselm, the eleventh century Archbishop of Canterbury who first gave a serious formulation of this argument. His argument was as follows: God is the greatest possible being. He is “That than which nothing greater can be thought”. God exists at least in the mind or understanding. A being who exists only in the mind is not so great as a being who exists in reality as well as in the mind.
