Biodiversity represents the immense variety of life on earth, including genes, species, and ecosystems that interact to sustain life processes and maintain ecological balance. Developing countries, despite being rich in biodiversity hotspots, face severe threats that have accelerated the decline of species and ecosystems. These nations are often home to tropical forests, wetlands, coral reefs, and savannahs, all of which provide essential ecosystem services such as climate regulation, water purification, soil fertility, and food resources. However, rapid industrialization, demographic pressures, and socio-economic challenges have intensified the vulnerability of biodiversity in these regions. The loss of biodiversity in developing countries results from a combination of anthropogenic and natural factors, where human-driven activities have a much larger role in disturbing the equilibrium of ecosystems and exhausting natural resources. One of the most prominent factors contributing to biodiversity loss in developing countries is deforestation. Forest ecosystems, particularly tropical rainforests, harbor the majority of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. However, expanding agricultural frontiers, commercial logging, mining, and infrastructure development have led to large-scale clearance of forests. Slash-and-burn practices, often used by local farmers to clear land, result in the destruction of habitat for countless species. For instance, the Amazon basin, parts of Southeast Asia, and the forests of Central Africa have witnessed alarming rates of deforestation, threatening endemic species and disrupting ecological processes.
