The Indian diaspora, one of the largest in the world, plays a significant role in India’s politico-economic landscape through remittances, investments, knowledge transfer, and diplomatic influence. Recognizing this importance, the Government of India has developed a wide range of programmes and schemes aimed at engaging, protecting, and leveraging its diaspora for national development while also addressing their welfare and identity concerns abroad. The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) scheme is another significant initiative that provides a form of long-term visa and certain economic and educational benefits to persons of Indian origin.
