 Imperialist historiography generally characterised the 18th century Maratha dominatian as chaotic and anarchic. On the other hand, in attempt to develop Nationalist historiography, several Maratha scholars saw the Maratha state as the last reincarnat$on of the Hindu empire.

Irfan Habib's thesis is that the Maratha movement was essentially a zamindar uprising of the imperial ruling class (mansabdars and jagirdars) of the Mughal Empire. It is the zamindar context of the Maratha state that he underlines.
