The phrase "universal decline" reflects a broader trend of political, economic, and social deterioration observed across various regions, and in India, it manifests as the disintegration of centralized powers, economic stagnation, and the erosion of global economic influence that India once enjoyed. The dynamics that unfolded during this time were influenced by various internal and external factors, including the weakening of the Mughal Empire, the rise of colonial powers, and the changing patterns of trade. 

In the Indian context, the decline of the Mughal Empire was one of the central reasons for the downturn in both political stability and economic prosperity. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the Mughal Empire, once a vast and powerful entity, was undergoing a period of fragmentation. Emperor Aurangzeb’s death in 1707 marked the beginning of a long decline. The once-unified empire became increasingly decentralized as regional powers began to assert themselves. The Marathas, Rajputs, Sikhs, and various other local rulers started to challenge Mughal authority, leading to constant conflicts and instability. The Mughal rulers were increasingly unable to control their territories, which resulted in a vacuum of power, making the subcontinent vulnerable to foreign invasions, particularly by the Persians and the Afghans, such as Nadir Shah’s invasion in 1739 and Ahmad Shah Durrani's multiple invasions in the 1750s. These invasions resulted in the plundering of India's wealth and contributed to the weakening of its economy.
