Suhungmung, also known as Dihingia Raja, was one of the most important rulers of the Ahom kingdom and ruled from 1497 to 1539 CE. His reign marked a major turning point in the history of medieval Assam. He transformed the Ahom state from a relatively small kingdom in the upper Brahmaputra valley into a large and powerful political formation. His policies of territorial expansion, administrative reorganisation and cultural interaction laid the foundations for the later strength of the Ahom kingdom. Suhungmung belonged to the Ahom dynasty founded by Sukapha in the thirteenth century. He came to the throne in 1497 and shifted the royal residence from the traditional Ahom centre towards the Dihing region.
