# Jain Tradition Jainism has a long and significant history in medieval India and continued to play an important role in the religious, social, cultural and intellectual life of the subcontinent between c.1206 and 1550. Although Jainism was older than the Delhi Sultanate, Jain communities and institutions adapted to the changing political circumstances and maintained their influence, particularly in western and southern India. The major Jain traditions were the Digambara and Śvetāmbara sects, each having its own religious practices, monastic traditions and literary contributions. During this period, Jainism was particularly influential in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Malwa and parts of the Deccan and Karnataka.
