(i) Formation of carbonylate anion by addition of alkali or reduction:

a. Addition of alkali: Ni(CO)4 + 2NaOH → Na2[Ni(CO)4] + 2H2O

In this reaction, the metal carbonyl compound Ni(CO)4 reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form the sodium salt of the tetracarbonylnickelate(II) anion, Na2[Ni(CO)4].
