Give an account of the development of geomorphological concepts

Geomorphology, the study of the Earth's surface and its evolution, has a long and rich history of scientific inquiry and discovery. The development of geomorphological concepts has been shaped by a range of factors, including advances in Earth science, new technologies, and changing perspectives on the processes that shape the landscape.

The earliest ideas about geomorphology can be traced back to ancient Greece, where philosophers such as Aristotle and Theophrastus wrote about the origin of the Earth and the nature of the landscape. However, it was not until the Renaissance and the scientific revolution that systematic studies of geomorphology began. In the 17th and 18th centuries, scientists such as Nicolaus Steno, James Hutton, and William Smith made important contributions to the understanding of geology and geomorphology.
