The development of a new product is a systematic process through which a retailer or fashion business identifies a market opportunity and converts it into a product that satisfies consumer needs while also achieving business objectives. In Buying and Merchandising-I, new product development is especially important because buying and merchandising involve understanding customers, selecting suitable merchandise, planning quantities, controlling costs and presenting products effectively. A successful new product should have the right design, quality, price, quantity and timing. The first step is idea generation. New product ideas can come from many sources such as customers, sales staff, buyers, merchandisers, designers, competitors, fashion shows, social media, market research and changes in consumer lifestyles. A buyer or merchandiser continuously observes the market to identify gaps in the existing product range. For example, suppose a fashion retailer notices that customers are increasingly looking for comfortable office wear that can also be worn casually. The retailer may develop an idea for a smart casual cotton shirt made from breathable and easy-care fabric. The second step is idea screening. A large number of ideas may be generated but all ideas cannot be developed into actual products. Therefore, the buyer and merchandising team evaluate each idea on the basis of ______ ______ _________ ______ __________ __________ ______ ____ ___ _____ ____.
