Feudalism was the dominant social and economic system in medieval Europe, emerging between the 9th and 15th centuries. It was a hierarchical structure based on land ownership, loyalty, and mutual obligations, shaping the cultural patterns and social formations of the medieval world. This system was fundamentally rooted in the relationship between the king, nobles, knights, and peasants, forming a rigid social hierarchy that defined medieval European society.  

At the apex of the feudal system was the king, who was regarded as the supreme ruler and the ultimate owner of all land within his kingdom. However, due to the vastness of the territories and the need for administration and defense, the king would grant large portions of land, called fiefs, to powerful nobles or lords. In return, these nobles pledged allegiance to the king, offering military support, political counsel, and financial contributions when necessary. This relationship was formalized through a ceremony called "homage and fealty," where a noble swore loyalty to the king.  

Beneath the king were the great lords and barons, who played a crucial role in the feudal hierarchy. These nobles held significant power and controlled large estates, which they further divided among lesser nobles and knights. They acted as intermediaries between the king and the lower ranks of society, ensuring that military service and taxation obligations were met.
