The Election Commission of India (ECI) is a constitutional body responsible for administering elections in India. ### Organisation of the Election Commission

The Election Commission of India consists of a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners, if any. Initially, the Election Commission was a single-member body, but in 1989, it was expanded to a multi-member body. Today, the Election Commission typically comprises three members: the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners. The President of India appoints the members of the Election Commission, and the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners are appointed for a tenure of six years, or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first. 

The Election Commission operates autonomously and is independent of the executive, legislature, and judiciary. This ensures its impartiality in conducting elections. While the Chief Election Commissioner enjoys equal status with the other Election Commissioners, they act as a collective body in decision-making processes.
