The concept of entropy, rooted in the second law of thermodynamics, has significantly influenced the development and emergence of ecological economics. Entropy refers to the measure of disorder or randomness in a system. In thermodynamics, it represents the irreversible dispersal of energy and the tendency of natural systems to move toward a state of increased disorder over time. This scientific principle has profound implications when applied to economic systems, particularly in the context of sustainability, resource use, and the limits of economic growth. As ecological economics emerged as a response to the limitations of traditional neoclassical economics, the idea of entropy played a central role in shaping its foundations and objectives. The second law of thermodynamics states that in an isolated system, entropy can only increase or remain constant; it cannot decrease. This means that over time, energy becomes more evenly distributed, making it less available to perform useful work. In the context of the physical world, this implies that the energy available for economic activity is finite and degrades in quality as it is used. Traditional economic theories have largely ignored this fundamental constraint, treating the economy as a closed system where resources are endlessly available and waste can be overlooked. In contrast, ecological economics integrates the laws of thermodynamics, particularly the concept of entropy, to emphasize that the economy operates within the finite boundaries of the Earth’s ecosystems. One of the earliest and most influential thinkers to apply thermodynamic principles to economics was Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen. His work in the 1970s played a pivotal role in the birth of ecological economics. ______ __________ ____ _________ __________ ________ ________ __________ ___.
