The origin of the state has been a subject of much debate among political philosophers. Two prominent theories explaining the emergence and development of the state are the Social Contract theory and the Marxian theory. These theories differ fundamentally in their understanding of the state’s nature, its purpose, and the historical conditions that led to its formation. The Social Contract theory, with key proponents such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, posits that the state originated from a hypothetical agreement or contract among individuals in a state of nature. According to this view, individuals in the state of nature were free and equal, but the absence of a higher authority led to conflict, insecurity, and disorder. To resolve these issues, individuals agreed to surrender certain freedoms and submit to the authority of a central governing body. The social contract is thus the basis of political authority and legitimacy, as it represents the collective will of individuals to form a society and establish a state that would protect their rights, maintain order, and promote the common good.
In Hobbes’ view, outlined in *Leviathan*, the state of nature is characterized by a state of constant warfare, where individuals act out of self-interest and are in a perpetual struggle for survival. Hobbes famously describes life in the state of nature as “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” To escape this condition, individuals form a contract to create a powerful sovereign, a Leviathan, who would have absolute authority to maintain peace and prevent conflict.
