Measurement is a fundamental process in research methodology because it provides a systematic way of assigning numbers or symbols to the characteristics, attributes, or properties of objects, individuals, events, or phenomena according to predetermined rules. In social sciences, business research, behavioural studies, and many other fields, researchers deal with concepts such as attitude, satisfaction, intelligence, motivation, income, productivity, social status, and quality of life. Many of these concepts cannot be observed or measured directly. Measurement therefore helps researchers convert abstract concepts into observable and analyzable variables. Measurement can be understood as the process of assigning numerals to objects or observations so that the numerals represent specific characteristics according to established rules. The purpose is not merely to attach numbers but to ensure that these numbers meaningfully represent the properties being studied. For example, a researcher studying customer satisfaction may develop a set of questions through which respondents indicate whether they are very dissatisfied, dissatisfied, neutral, satisfied, or very satisfied. These responses can then be systematically coded and analyzed statistically. Scaling is closely related to measurement but is more specifically concerned with the construction of a continuum or a set of categories on which the intensity, degree, or direction of a characteristic can be placed. Scaling is particularly important when researchers measure psychological and social variables that do not have a direct physical unit. Attitudes, opinions, perceptions, preferences, and satisfaction are commonly measured through scales. For example, an attitude scale may ask respondents to indicate their level of agreement with statements ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.” The measurement process generally involves identifying the concept to be measured, defining it operationally, identifying suitable indicators, developing measurement items, assigning values or scores, and assessing the quality of the resulting measurement.
