India’s federal political structure has been significantly shaped by the interplay of regional identity and language. The country’s immense diversity in terms of culture, traditions, ethnicity, and linguistic plurality has ensured that regional identity continues to be a central theme in state politics. Unlike many other federations, the Indian states are not merely administrative units but also socio-cultural entities where distinct identities are preserved and asserted. Regional identity and language act both as instruments of political mobilization and as determinants of state-level policies, while also influencing national politics through coalition arrangements and federal bargaining. The origins of linguistic and regional identity politics in India can be traced back to the colonial period, when British policies of classification and census brought community and linguistic distinctions to the forefront. The nationalist movement itself had a complex relationship with regional identities.
