Theories of punishment not only reflect the goals of the state in maintaining law and order but also reveal the balance between justice, deterrence, reform, and social protection. Within social work and criminal justice, these theories are important because they determine how offenders are treated, how victims are supported, and how society as a whole is safeguarded from crime. Theories of punishment are broadly categorized into retributive, deterrent, preventive, and reformative, with some hybrid approaches that combine aspects of each. The retributive theory of punishment is based on the idea of moral retribution, which means that the offender deserves to suffer in proportion to the crime committed.
