After India gained independence in 1947, the newly formed government recognized the need to address the unique concerns of its tribal populations. The tribal communities, who lived in remote, often inaccessible regions, were historically marginalized and remained largely unaffected by mainstream social, economic, and political developments. They had their distinct cultures, languages, social systems, and ways of life, which required special attention in the context of national development. The post-independence period saw several tribal policies being formulated, with the aim of protecting their rights, preserving their cultures, and integrating them into the larger Indian society without disrupting their traditional way of life. 1. The Constitution of India and Tribal Rights

The Indian Constitution, adopted in 1950, played a foundational role in the formulation of tribal policies.
