Discuss the theory of inter-governmentalism in the context of European Union integration

Many theories have emerged which attempt to explain the process and outcome of integration in Europe. They try to clarify how and why the  European Union came about and how it is today. Theories are important as they help us to understand how the EU works, and having a better  understanding of how the EU has developed allows us to hypothesise about what the EU might be like in the future.
