These steps help in acquiring and interpreting remotely sensed data for informed decision-making during all phases of disaster management. 1. Energy Source or Illumination The first step in the remote sensing process is the availability of an energy source. Most remote sensing systems depend on sunlight as a natural source of electromagnetic energy, although active sensors like RADAR and LiDAR generate their own energy. The electromagnetic radiation from these sources travels through the atmosphere and interacts with objects on the Earth's surface. The type of energy source and its properties (wavelength, intensity, and coherence) determine the effectiveness of remote sensing. 2. Radiation and the Atmosphere As electromagnetic energy travels from its source to the target (and back to the sensor), it interacts with the atmosphere. This interaction involves absorption, scattering, and refraction. Atmospheric interference, such as clouds, dust, and water vapor, can distort the signal and affect data quality. Different wavelengths are affected differently by atmospheric particles; for example, shorter wavelengths (such as ultraviolet) are more susceptible to scattering than longer wavelengths (like infrared and microwave). 3.
