The Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 was enacted to provide a fair, transparent and participatory process for acquiring land for public purposes while ensuring adequate compensation, rehabilitation and resettlement of affected families. The Act replaced the earlier Land Acquisition Act, 1894 and introduced several safeguards to protect the rights of landowners and other affected persons. The procedure for land acquisition begins with the identification of land required for a public purpose. The acquiring authority must conduct a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) in most cases to examine the social consequences of the proposed acquisition. The SIA study evaluates the impact on affected families, livelihood, environment, infrastructure and local communities.
