The development of Japanese thought was shaped by a complex interaction of indigenous beliefs, imported religious traditions, philosophical ideas, and changing political and social conditions. Shinto was not based on a single founder or sacred scripture but evolved from the worship of nature, ancestors, and numerous kami (spirits or deities). It emphasized harmony between human beings and nature, ritual purity, respect for tradition, and loyalty to family and community. The imperial family claimed descent from the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, giving the emperor divine legitimacy. Shinto thus became closely associated with political authority and national identity. Unlike many organized religions, Shinto focused more on rituals than on theology, encouraging values of sincerity, simplicity, and reverence for the natural world. The introduction of Buddhism from Korea and China during the sixth century brought profound changes to Japanese intellectual and cultural life. Buddhism introduced sophisticated philosophical concepts concerning suffering, impermanence, karma, rebirth, and enlightenment. Different Buddhist schools flourished, each contributing uniquely to Japanese society. Tendai and Shingon emphasized esoteric rituals and spiritual discipline, while Pure Land Buddhism appealed to common people through faith in Amida Buddha. Zen Buddhism became particularly influential among the samurai class because of its emphasis on meditation, discipline, self-control, and direct experience. Zen philosophy encouraged simplicity, mental concentration, courage, and detachment from material desires, values that influenced Japanese arts such as tea ceremony, flower arrangement, painting, gardening, and martial traditions. Buddhism also stimulated education and literary development. Buddhist monasteries became important centers of learning where scriptures, philosophy, medicine, and history were studied. Buddhist ethics promoted compassion, charity, and moral discipline while coexisting peacefully with Shinto beliefs.
