The Satavahana period was important in the history of the Deccan because it was in the first century B.C. that the earliest state came into being in peninsular India. The administration of the state was simpler than that of the Mauryas. A crucial factor was the expansion of overland and maritime trade networks.

There are many theories which seek to explain the reasong for the emergence of a state. Reasons for the emergence of a state vary from region to region.
