The Chakma are one of the important tribal communities of Northeast India and are recognized as a Scheduled Tribe in several states, including Mizoram. They mainly inhabit the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) area in the southern part of Mizoram, particularly in Lawngtlai district. Besides Mizoram, Chakmas are also found in Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Bangladesh, and parts of Myanmar. Their history, culture, language, and traditions make them a distinct ethnic community with a rich heritage. The origin of the Chakmas is linked to the Chittagong Hill Tracts of present-day Bangladesh. Many Chakma families migrated to Mizoram due to political unrest, displacement, and the construction of the Kaptai Dam in the 1960s, which submerged large areas of their ancestral land. The Government of India later provided settlements for many displaced Chakma families in the southern region of Mizoram.
