Generally, the idea of Swadeshi in Gandhian philosophy means local self-reliance and use of local knowledge and abilities. In other words it aims at appropriate technology. Swadeshi (Self-reliance) is mainly understood to mean a protectionist technique that Gandhi employed against the mercantile policies of the British, whereby the masses were
urged to abstain from using cloth manufactured outside India, and instead to use cotton, silk, or wool cloth made in India.
