Family, as one of the oldest social institutions, has always been shaped and defined by norms, values, and cultural expectations. From the perspective of sexuality and heteronormativity, the family becomes not only a site of love, care, and kinship but also a place where power, conformity, and social regulation are deeply embedded. The family has long been considered a natural and unquestioned unit in society, often idealized as heterosexual, monogamous, and reproductive. This assumption, however, ignores the diversity of sexualities and family forms that exist outside the boundaries of heteronormative ideals. Understanding family through the lens of sexuality and heteronormativity reveals the ways in which social structures attempt to regulate intimacy, enforce conformity, and marginalize those who do not fit within traditional family models. Heteronormativity refers to the belief system in which heterosexuality is taken as the default, natural, and superior mode of sexuality. It not only presumes that men and women are the only natural pairings but also assigns gender roles within the family, expecting men to be breadwinners and women to be caregivers. This framework establishes the nuclear heterosexual family—husband, wife, and children—as the societal standard. In most societies, legal systems, religious doctrines, and cultural practices reinforce this model, privileging heterosexual families while rendering other family structures less legitimate or even deviant. For example, in many countries, same-sex couples are still denied legal rights to marry or adopt children, revealing the persistent power of heteronormative definitions of family. From a sexuality perspective, the family can be understood as both a site where sexuality is disciplined and where it is expressed. On one hand, families regulate the sexual behavior of their members by imposing expectations of chastity before marriage, fidelity within marriage, and reproduction as a natural outcome of intimacy. Parents and extended kin often play a role in monitoring and controlling the sexuality of children, particularly daughters, emphasizing norms of modesty, virginity, and heterosexual marriage.
