Control of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM):
Suspended particulate matter includes dust, smoke, soot, and aerosols that remain suspended in the air. These particles vary in size, and their control methods differ accordingly. Some of the widely used methods are:
1. Gravitational Settling Chambers:
These chambers allow particles to settle out of the air stream by gravity. As the air slows down in a large chamber, heavier particles fall to the bottom due to their mass. This method is effective for removing large particles but is inefficient for fine particulates.
2. Cyclone Separators:
Cyclonic separators use centrifugal force to separate particles from the air stream. The polluted air enters the device tangentially, creating a spiral motion. Particles are flung to the outer wall and collected at the bottom. Cyclones are relatively inexpensive and efficient for medium to large-sized particles.
3. Baghouse Filters:
These are fabric filters that capture particles as air passes through them. The particles accumulate on the filter surface, which is periodically cleaned. Bag filters are highly efficient, capable of removing up to 99% of fine particles, including PM2.5 and PM10. They are widely used in industries like cement, steel, and power plants.
4. Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs):
ESPs apply an electric charge to the particles in the air stream, causing them to migrate to oppositely charged plates where they are collected.
