The history of Indian emigration during colonial times is deeply intertwined with the forces of imperialism, economic changes, and the movement of labor across global frontiers. During the British colonial rule in India, which spanned from the mid-18th century to 1947, the process of migration was shaped by both push and pull factors, which led to the formation of diaspora and transnational communities across the world. The colonial state implemented policies that facilitated the movement of Indians to various parts of the British Empire, while also attempting to regulate and control this migration in ways that benefited the imperial economy. 

The first major wave of emigration from India began in the early 19th century and was largely driven by the labor needs of the British Empire, especially after the abolition of slavery in 1833. As the empire expanded its colonial reach, the demand for labor in the sugar plantations of the Caribbean, Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa grew. The British government and colonial authorities began to import Indian laborers to work on these plantations, where local indigenous populations were either unwilling or unable to work in the same numbers. 

The system of indentured labor was established to manage this migration. Under this system, Indian workers, often from rural areas, were recruited by British agents with promises of paid work, free accommodation, and a return passage after a fixed term of service (usually 5 years). In reality, many of these workers faced harsh living and working conditions, with little chance of returning home. The recruitment of indentured laborers began in the 1830s, and India became a significant source of labor for the British Empire's plantations.
