Rural social assistance and welfare programmes in India form a crucial pillar of the country’s rural development strategy, aiming to protect vulnerable populations from poverty, social exclusion, food insecurity, ill health, unemployment, and old-age destitution. Given that a significant proportion of India’s population resides in rural areas and depends on agriculture and informal employment, the state has historically intervened through a wide range of social assistance measures.
