Antibodies:

Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins (Ig), are proteins produced by the immune system in response to the presence of foreign substances called antigens. These antigens can be anything from bacteria and viruses to toxins and other foreign molecules. Antibodies play a crucial role in the immune system's ability to recognize and neutralize harmful invaders.

There are several classes of antibodies, each with specific functions. The five main classes are IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM. Each class has a distinct structure and function, allowing the immune system to respond effectively to a wide range of pathogens.

Structure of Immunoglobulins:

Immunoglobulins are Y-shaped molecules, and their basic structural unit is a monomer composed of two identical heavy chains and two identical light chains. The overall structure consists of two arms (Fab regions) and a stem (Fc region). The Fab regions are responsible for antigen binding, while the Fc region interacts with various cells and molecules in the immune system.

*Heavy Chains:*

The heavy chains are larger polypeptide chains, and there are different types of heavy chains, giving rise to the different classes of antibodies. These heavy chains are connected to the light chains by disulfide bonds.

*Light Chains:*

The light chains are smaller polypeptide chains and are of two types: kappa (κ) and lambda (λ). Each light chain is connected to a heavy chain by a disulfide bond.

*Fab Region:*

The Fab region, or antigen-binding fragment, is at the top of the Y-shaped structure and consists of the variable regions of both the heavy and light chains. These variable regions are responsible for recognizing and binding to specific antigens.

*Fc Region:*

The Fc region, or crystalline fragment, is the stem of the Y-shaped structure. It determines the antibody's class and interacts with various immune cells and molecules, mediating different immune responses.
