Anthropology and development have had a long-standing, complex, and often contested relationship. While anthropology as a discipline focuses on understanding human societies, cultures, and their evolution in a holistic manner, development is a process often driven by economic, political, and institutional goals aimed at improving living standards. The intersection of these two domains—referred to as "development anthropology" or "anthropology of development"—has led to significant debates on whether anthropology should serve developmental agendas or critique them. Development anthropology emerged strongly in the post-World War II period, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s, when Western countries began funding large-scale development programs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. These programs were heavily influenced by modernization theory, which viewed traditional societies as stagnant and in need of transformation through economic growth, industrialization, and urbanization.
