The rise of Buddhism and Jainism in the 6th century BCE was a result of deep socio-religious and intellectual ferment that gripped northern India, particularly the region of Magadha and the surrounding areas, including the Bhojpur region. This period is often referred to as a time of profound philosophical and social questioning, where new ideas challenged the established Vedic traditions. The emergence of these heterodox religions signified a break from orthodoxy and reflected the need for social reform, spiritual accessibility, and intellectual freedom. The common people, especially the lower varnas like the Shudras and the emerging merchant class (Vaishyas), felt excluded from spiritual practices and access to knowledge. These groups were discontented with the rigidity and ritualism of the Vedic religion, and this discontent became a fertile ground for new religious movements.
