Classification of Pollutants

1. Based on Source:

  • Natural Pollutants: These originate from natural sources such as volcanic eruptions, forest fires, sea spray, and pollen grains. For example, volcanic eruptions release sulfur dioxide and particulate matter; forest fires emit carbon monoxide and other hydrocarbons.

  • Anthropogenic Pollutants: These are the result of human activities like industrial emissions, vehicular exhaust, mining, and agricultural practices. For instance, industrial processes may release sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals such as lead and mercury.

2. Based on Physical State:

  • Gaseous Pollutants: These include pollutants in the form of gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), ozone (O₃), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

  • Particulate Pollutants: These are fine solid or liquid particles suspended in air or water, such as dust, smoke, soot, and aerosols. Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10) are significant air pollutants that pose health risks.

  • Liquid Pollutants: These include oil spills, chemical effluents, and sewage discharged into water bodies. These pollutants often cause water contamination and affect aquatic ecosystems.

  • Solid Pollutants: Solid waste materials like plastics, metals, glass, paper, and biomedical waste are dumped in landfills or into the environment, causing soil and water pollution.
