Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) are the levels of intake of essential nutrients that, on the basis of scientific knowledge, are judged by the Food and Nutrition Board to be adequate to meet the known nutrient needs of practically all healthy persons.

The RDA (or the AI if an RDA is not available) is the appropriate target for guidance to consumers on healthy nutrient intakes. Because an individual’s actual requirement is almost never known, the goal is to reduce to a very low level the risk that an intake is inadequate. By definition, usual intake at the level of the RDA or AI has a low risk of inadequacy (2 or 3% for the RDA). The appropriate target for vitamin D intake for a woman 31–50 years of age, for example, is the RDA of 600 IU (15 µg)/day. Her target for potassium would be the AI of 4.7 g/day .
