Attirampakkam is one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites in India and South Asia. It is located in the Kortallayar River basin, about 60 km northwest of Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu. The site has gained international significance because it preserves a long sequence of Lower, Middle, and Late Palaeolithic cultural deposits, providing valuable evidence for the evolution of stone tool technology and early human behaviour. The site was first discovered by the British geologist Robert Bruce Foote in 1863, who is often regarded as the "Father of Indian Prehistory." Since its discovery, Attirampakkam has been extensively investigated by archaeologists. Recent excavations conducted by researchers from the Sharma Centre for Heritage Education have revealed important evidence regarding the antiquity of human occupation in the Indian subcontinent. Attirampakkam is best known for its Acheulean assemblage.
